Excavator Hire · With or Without Operator · Christchurch & Canterbury
Mini diggers through to 30-tonne excavators, available for hire across Christchurch and Canterbury. Bull Construction offers digger hire with an experienced operator on site, or dry hire for those who want to run the machine themselves.
If you're not sure what size you need - that's a normal question. Tell us the scope of the job and we'll advise the right machine before you commit to anything.
Same-day response. After-hours callouts available.
Most national hire companies give you the machine and leave. That works fine for certain jobs - if you have an operator or the work is straightforward, dry hire is the right call.
But a lot of jobs in Christchurch don't work that way. When a residential excavation needs to hit a specific formation level, when a foundation trench needs to sit at an engineer-specified depth, or when a tight inner-suburb section requires someone who can read the ground and make a call at the machine - an experienced operator changes the outcome.
Bull Construction offers both.
The right machine depends on site access, volume of work, and what you're trying to do. Over-specifying wastes money; under-specifying costs time. If you're not sure which size suits the job, describe the scope and we'll advise before you confirm anything.
For tight access. Residential sections, enclosed yard work, landscaping excavation, and shallow trenching. Fits through standard gates and narrow site entrances without surface damage. Right for heritage-zoned inner-city sections, basement access, and close-boundary work where a larger machine would create problems.
The standard workhorse for Christchurch residential earthmoving and light commercial work. Good output with a footprint that suits most Canterbury new build sites - handles the majority of site preparation, foundation excavation, and drainage trenching across Rolleston, Prebbleton, Lincoln, and the Christchurch suburbs.
For open sites with good access and genuine volume to move. Subdivision platform work, large commercial site preparation, and civil contracts requiring material shifted efficiently. Significantly higher output than mid-range machines - right for outer Canterbury growth areas and infrastructure contracts.
Machine availability depends on current scheduling. Call Zac on 027 379 6107 to confirm the right machine for your scope and lock in a date.
For most residential clients, digger hire is a once-off requirement - a section preparation for a new build, pool or spa excavation, retaining wall cut, landscaping overhaul, or clearing work before building starts. The questions are almost always the same: what size do I need, how long will it take, will it fit through the gate, and how much will it cost?
Bull Construction works directly with homeowners and residential builders across Christchurch and the Canterbury suburbs. For jobs where you want the machine and an experienced operator - or where the work requires specific levels or grades - we recommend operated hire. For straightforward jobs where you or your builder will run the machine, dry hire is available. See also full earthmoving services in Christchurch if your project needs a complete site package.

Head contractors and construction companies sometimes need additional plant on a contract without bringing on a full earthmoving package. Bull Construction is available for operated digger hire as a subcontract plant supplier - machine and operator, invoiced as a subcontract item within your programme.
For contractors who need dry hire to supplement an existing operating crew, that's available too. Machine sizes from 1t through to 30t.
If the contract requires a specific machine capability - reach, bucket size, or a particular attachment - get in touch before confirming. We'll tell you what's available and whether it suits the scope.
For longer-term operated plant arrangements on civil or infrastructure contracts, subcontract machine operating in Canterbury may suit the engagement better than hire.
Call 027 379 6107 or fill in the form. Tell us the site location, what you're excavating or moving, and roughly when you need the machine. You don't need to know the exact size - that's our job to work out from the scope.
Based on what you're trying to do, site access, and the volume of work, we'll recommend the right machine size. If the job sits on the edge between sizes, we'll explain the trade-off and let you decide. No upsell.
We confirm whether you want operated or dry hire, availability, and the hire period. For time-sensitive dates tied to a build programme, we'll tell you upfront whether it's achievable.
The excavator is transported to your site by trailer on the agreed date. For operated hire, Zac is on the machine from the start. Site access requirements - gate width, surface type, overhead clearance - are confirmed beforehand.
Machine leaves when the hire period ends or the work is complete. Any site finishing or cleanup required after excavation is discussed at the quote stage - it's easier to handle in one mobilisation.
Digger hire pricing is not a flat rate. Four variables drive the cost on every job. Bull Construction quotes based on the actual scope - not a standard rate card.
A 1–3t mini digger and a 30t excavator are priced differently. The right size for your job determines the rate. Booking a smaller machine to save money and running the job twice costs more overall.
Operated hire - machine plus experienced operator - costs more than plant-only. On jobs where formation level matters or site conditions are complex, operated hire typically saves money by getting the result right the first time.
Day rates and extended rates differ. Short hires carry a higher daily rate than multi-day or weekly engagements. For jobs spanning several days - or where the programme isn't fixed - discuss the likely duration at the quote stage.
Plant needs to get to site. Delivery is included in the quote and distance affects it. Tight driveways, soft ground, or overhead services may affect which machine is suitable and can add to hire time.
Digger hire rates in Christchurch vary based on machine size, whether you want an operator, and how long you need it. A 1–3t mini digger on dry hire is a different price to a 30t excavator with operator. Bull Construction does not publish day rates - every quote is based on your actual job. Fill in the form or call 027 379 6107 and we'll give you a figure based on the scope, not a rate sheet.
Most residential landscaping, pool excavation, and tight-access work in Christchurch suits 1–5 tonnes. Standard section preparation and foundation excavation suits 5–10 tonnes. Large-scale earthworks, subdivision contracts, and commercial site preparation typically needs 12–30 tonnes. If you describe the job, we'll tell you the right size - it's a question we answer every day.
Yes. Operated hire is available for all machine sizes - from mini diggers through to 30-tonne excavators. The operator has more than ten years' experience on Canterbury's earthmoving and civil contracts. For residential foundation work, jobs with specific levels to hold, or sites with tight access and close boundaries - operated hire is available.
For residential jobs, one to two weeks is usually enough. For commercial contracts or specific dates tied to a build programme, the earlier the better - plant availability cannot be guaranteed for last-minute bookings during peak periods. Call 027 379 6107 and we'll tell you what's available.
Yes. Plant is transported by trailer to your site. Delivery is factored into the quote. If your site has access restrictions - narrow gate, soft ground, overhead lines, tight driveway - tell us when you enquire and we'll plan the delivery accordingly.

Yes. Dry hire - plant only - is available for all machine sizes. You run the machine; we supply it, transport it to site, and collect it when the hire period ends. If you're an experienced operator or working alongside your own crew, dry hire is straightforward.
